I knew Dennis from the time he joined the Regiment (I think he transferred from 5 RTR when it was disbanded 1969/70). Always very helpful with a sense of humour. Vic Finch and myself took over from him as Sqn Clerks when Ajax relieved Badger at Gosford Castle in Northern Ireland and as expected from him it was a a good transfer.
I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He’s someone I will always remember.
RIP Dennis and my condolences to Mary and your family.
RIP Dennis, condolences to the family. Another regimental legend gone. I will hopefully attend the funeral on the 21st to say my farewell to a true gent.
RIP Denis, remember when I first started as a clerk and did my first tea run, the size of your mug compared to everone elses, just like yourself, larger than life, you’ll be missed, but we’ll all have a tale to remember you by, FN, see in the green fields some day.
Condolences to the family. I remember Denis Mariot well, for his total knowledge of all things clerking – a legend. After an adventure training trip to France I submitted all our receipts to him to check and to pay the CILOR bill. Like most expeditions we collected any and all receipts we found on supermarket floors to make sure we had enough to cover the daily CILOR allocation. I got a call asking me to go to RHQ to explain which soldier needed the tampons on one of the receipts. We had a laugh and he paid the CILOR in full!. Rest easy Denis till we meet again in the Tankie Tavern.
I worked with Denis for many years. His awesome memory of regimental numbers, knowledge of odd name and place spellings and the like on Docs Checks was the stuff of legend. You could try arguing with him but there was no point, he was always right!
I remember well, through an alcoholic haze, Sunday afternoons in the pub at Wolbeck – the name escapes me – playing dice for beer and schnapps with the locals after Saturday night babysitting. Getting away from barracks for a while was a Muenster highlight for me, though I doubt I properly thanked my hosts, so I’ll do it now. Thank you both, and thanks to the kids who never, as I recall, actually woke up and made me earn my keep.
R I P Dennis many memories including the shenanigans when you were Sqn clerk Badger in Bovi where I first met you, condolences to Mary and the family sorry I can not attend your Funeral.
RIP Dennis, we had so many good chats giving you a lift to camp from Wolbeck and some great times down in the cellar bar. Long time not seeing you old friend but never forgot.
Thinking of Mary and the family at this sad time.
God Bless Dennis and his lovely family I had stayed in touch with his daughter clare, SGT Marriot was an absolute legend and made me laugh with the memories to this day, very humble ,kind and humorous man never once heard him pull rank or raise his voice.
