There was a good turnout in South Wales on the 7th August 2026, from both the 2nd and the Parachute Sqn, RAC, to see Gig Young off to the Green Fields. Amongst others, those attending included Graham Wilding, Richard Baker, Cyril Whatling, Roger Herbert Phil Green and Spider Webb and the RTR Association Standard from Cardiff; a special thank you to Spider, who managed to provide a Regimental flag/coffin drape after the one from HHQ RTR failed to materialise.
Wolfie… as I posted elsewhere, I can only pass on that which I was told… well done Alan, it’s a pity you didn’t introduce himself when I could have thanked you personally.
I was a boy soldier in Bovington when I first met Gig, he arrived and was my PS troop Sgt. He was a smashing bloke, he was fair approachable strict but also had a good listening ear. After I joined the regt and moved from Bovvy to Munster I bumped into him again whilst walking back from lunch to Badger block he came walking towards me. Recognised me straight away and stopped and chatted for 10 minutes.
A lovely man and a truly smashing bloke.
R.I.P Sir
Gig was my SSM whilst I was in Cyclops awaiting my posting to MVEE, I will never forget the block inspection he did with Major Davey it was so hilarious.
I met Ken in Lulworth when he lived a couple of doors down in the Oval (Tom Watson was next door to me and Ann). On moving to Munster played a few games of squash so got to know him quite well. We met up since a few time at the Hereford reunion.
A great guy. RIP Gig.
Ken was a very good friend of mine, we last served together in Omagh but kept in touch over the last 40 years exchanging phone calls every month or so An excellent friend who always kept an interest in the Regiment. For those of you who new Ken andCyn she sadly passed away about 8 weeks ago.
Yours Cyril the squirrel
I first met Gig in Omagh, think he was SSM NERO. He was extremely generous in looking out for the young subalterns and keeping us on the straight and narrow. RIP
RIP Gig ill always remember when i was your driver in canada that you would shout stop and then i would see you running up the hills to get a bearing whilst on the plains and also i remember baby sitting for you and cyn in munster keep a look out for otto up there in the green fields
First touched base with Ken Young in the later years of Hohne…..served with him at Lulworth and on return to BAOR where I was his operator for a short period…..we continually remained in contact during military service with both Bridie and myself lucky to share friendship with Ken and Cyn Young. I was fortunate to share a breakfast with them at a reunion in Hereford.
Ken was an exceptional soldier and on commission an exceptional officer. He had a wonderful family with the support of Cyn and a great son in Andrew.
Both Bridie and I were saddened to hear of the passing of such a good friend, we send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and military colleagues.
The pic above is of the Nero rugby team in Omagh ’79; Gig is in the second row, third from right in front of Ron Walton. I’m not sure when Gig joined the Regiment, but he was in the Parachute Sqn, RAC in the 60’s, a Tp Sgt in JL’s, returning to the Regiment in Münster when he was SSM Cyclops. He was one of our senior WO’s, who on commissioning became a Coy Cmdr in the RAMC, completing his service as a Major. I got to know him again during the Hereford reunions, hence my knowledge of his dry-stone walling skills. RIP Gig.

Rest in peace Gig. I first got to know you in Munster then again in Fallingbostel and found you hadn’t changed one bit. You were the same great guy. God bless.

Nice one Phil, can you edit the RTR flag for drape was supplied and delivered to Funeral directors by Alan (Donny) Donavan, not Spider, 🙏
